Trade Dollars were a type of coin issued by the United States Mint from 1873 to 1885, primarily intended to facilitate trade with Asia, particularly China. The coins were minted in Philadelphia and featured an image of Lady Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse. The Trade Dollar was made of 90% silver and weighed 420 grains (about 27 grams), which was similar to the Mexican peso, a popular trade coin at the time. Although they were not widely accepted in domestic transactions, Trade Dollars hold significant value for collectors today, especially in higher grades.
