V Nickels, or Liberty Head Nickels, are five-cent coins produced by the United States Mint from 1883 to 1913. The design features a bust of Lady Liberty on the obverse and a large "V" on the reverse, representing the Roman numeral for five. The 1883 V Nickel is particularly noteworthy for its initial lack of the word "cents," which led to instances of the coin being gold-plated and passed off as a $5 gold piece. This error resulted in the quick introduction of the word "cents" on later editions. Collectors value the 1883 V Nickel for its historical significance and the variety of conditions it can be found in.
