Bush, and they married on January 6, 1945, while he was on leave from his wartime deployment as a Navy pilot. </p> <p> Barbara Bush was an admired First Lady, proud mother of six children, and accomplished author. She was also a strong champion for vulnerable communities, including the homeless and HIV/AIDS patients. Believing that every American should have the chance to learn to read and write, she launched the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy in 1989. During her lifetime, it provided more than $110 million in support for literacy programs. </p>
