Just like the Philadelphia and Denver Mint issues, it is the most common date of its decade from the San Francisco Mint yet the scarcest of the 1939s. The 1939-S is plentiful in Mint State grades all the way through MS67, which is a high gem grade that is slightly tougher. MS68 is actually very rare as there are just a handful of this finest grade in existence. This date comes with nice white luster and an unusually strong strike for a San Francisco minted coin.
