1875-S 20c

Coin / United States of America / 1875 / San Francisco / 20-Cent Pieces / 20c

The 1875-S Twenty Cent Piece is of the first and only year of issue from the San Francisco Mint known to be the ultimate type coin for this short, desirable series as it is plentiful and affordable. Be mindful of the S over S Variety that is a bit scarcer. It comes from a healthy mintage of 1,155,000 but it is very common in every grade up to and including MS65. From MS62 through MS65 there are 4 total PL examples in NGC holders, which is the total for this date. Although it does exist in MS66 through MS68, there are only 144 PCGS and NGC graded examples remaining in existence according to population reports. There are 128 in the MS66 range, which make up a large majority of the relatively uncommon grades. MS67 accounts for 14 of those 144; and they are very scarce. It is the 2 MS68s that are true condition rarities. A special strike issue of this date was also struck and is extremely rare.
