Clark Grubers 1861-dated double eagle is the second rarest issue for the firm, with somewhere around 25 genuine examples known today. In 2007, David J. McCarthy identified repeating depressions on a group of deceptive forgeries. Presently, most of these are believed to have been removed from third-party grading holders. A single example for this date is graded MS61, and any choice AU specimen with original surfaces would qualify for the condition census.
