The 1860 Mormon half eagle obverse features a crouching lion and the motto HOLINESS TO THE LORD written in the Desert alphabet. The reverse depicts a beehive and eagle at its center with the denomination 5.D and the legend DESERET ASSAY OFFICE PURE GOLD around the periphery. Despite its low mintage, there are around three to four dozen Lion and Beehive $5s known today, and it is the most readily available Mormon gold coin in mint state.
