1849 G$5 Pacific Company K-1

Coin / United States of America / G$5 / Pacific Company / 1849 / California

A total of four Pacific Company $5s have been reported, only two of which are available to collectors: the Garrett specimen, which grades choice AU, and a piece once owned by Alexander Cartwright, a sometime coin dealer, who is perhaps most famous for his contributions to the rules governing the game of baseball. One of the remaining examples is impounded at the Smithsonian Institution, having been pulled from a bullion deposit at the U.S. Mint, while the other was stolen from Willis Dupont in 1967.
