Templeton Reids 1849-dated $25 gold piece is the only coin of this unusual denomination produced during any U.S. gold rush. It was deposited at the Philadelphia Mint along with the 1849 Templeton Reid $10 in early 1850, and according to Philadelphia Mint Assayers Eckfeldt and Dubois, it contained around $24.50 worth of California gold. Stolen from a display in the lobby of the Philadelphia Mint in 1858, the Templeton Reid $25 has never been recovered.
