The unique 1849 Templeton Reid $10 was received in a deposit at the Philadelphia Mint in early 1850. Mint employees recognized its rarity and set it aside for inclusion in the mint cabinet collection, which was transferred to the Smithsonian Institution in 1923. It is the only known example known and is believed to have been struck from California gold.
